Automobile engines are a fairly recent discovery
compared to the age of this planet, but jet engines are even newer. And usually
the newer something is, the more complex things get, and that is proven wit the
comparison of automobile engines to jet engines. So, there are many more
differences
between automobile engines and jet engines than there are similarities. First off, how does an automobile engine work? Well, it works something like this, when you turn the key, electricity is allowed to flow to the starter, which then turns the flywheel. Next, the flywheel is attached to the crankshaft so the crankshaft is turned. There are things called cylinders and they are basically just hollow tubes with pistons inside them. Attached to the pistons and the crankshaft are metal bars called connecting rods. At the same time that the starter is turning, an electric flow is going through the distributor cap and gong through the spark wires that are attached to the spark plugs. The spark plug is called that because it plugs a hole in the header (top of cylinder) and sparks to ignite the vapor fuel that is injected into the cylinder.

The spark plug is called that because it plugs a hole in the header (top of cylinder) and sparks to ignite the vapor fuel that is injected into the cylinder.
When the fuel is ignited, it explodes forcing the piston down and turning the crankshaft, which turns the flywheel and then is off to the transmission. Once you get the vehicle running, the engine does not need to have the starter running, trying to “turn it over.” The jet engine is very different and more complex than the automobile engine, for the fact that is has many more irregular parts and pieces than the automobile engine. The starting process normally uses an electric motor to spin the main turbine shaft. The motor is bolted to the outside of the engine and uses a shaft and gears to connect to the main shaft. The electric motor spins the main shaft until there is enough air blowing through the compressor and the combustion chamber to light the engine. Fuel starts flowing and an igniter similar to a spark plug ignites the fuel. Then fuel flow is increased to spin the engine up to its operating speed. If you have ever been at the airport and watched a big jet engine start up, you know that the blades start rotating slowly. The electric starter motor does that. Then you will usually hear a pop and see smoke come out of the back of the engine. Then the engine then spins faster and starts producing thrust. The jet engine and the automobile engine have many differences, like the way they propel the vehicles.
Jet engines use their exhaust as their thrust/ propulsion, where as the automobile engine uses the rotation of the 3 crankshaft/ flywheel that goes to the transmission. Another difference is the usual size of the engines. The jet engine is usually bigger than the automobile engine unless the jet engine is homemade. The jet engine is about five feet tall and fifteen feet long, where as a regular V- 8 vehicle engine is about two feet tall and three feet long. There are different types of jet and automobile engines and their size can vary a lot.
One major difference between a jet engine and an automobile engine is the way they use their fuel inside the engine. The jet engine has a the fan in front that pulls the air into the engine and then the air is pulled into the compressor which, as the name states, compresses the air and then it is pushed into the burning chamber where the fuel is injected and then ignited. After the mixed fuel and air is ignited, it is then forced out of the burning chamber and to the nozzle, which directs the air- flow in one direction.
How the air is used inside of the automobile and jet engines differ, but not greatly. They both have the air mixed with the fuel, ignite it, and let it out as exhaust; but inside the jet engine, the air is first compressed and then some of it goes into the cabin of the jet plane. The air inside of an automobile first passes through the air filter and the carburetor, and then to the cylinders where it is compressed and then ignited with the fuel mixed in with it, and then finally through the exhaust system. The exhaust system consists of the catalytic converter, exhaust pipe, and the muffler.
The types of vehicles that the engines propel can vary, but then they can be the same thing. Jet engines usually power planes and automobile engines usually power, of course, automobiles. There is an exception for what each engine powers, because some people put jet engines in cars and most private planes that have propellers use an engine that is very similar to an automobile's engine.
The types of fuel that each one uses can also be different. the jet engine uses a type of fuel called jet fuel, where as the automobile engine uses either gasoline of diesel fuel. The main differnece is that the jet fuel has a higher content of hydrogen, scientifically known as H2, and us used in gasoline and diesel also, just in a lower content.
The jet engine and the automobile engine are similar also, for the fact that they bith propel objects. They also have th run on something or else they just wont run, that some thing is usually fuel. The jet may pull more air through it than that of an automobile, byt they both use air to mix with the fuel.
Even though there are many more differences between automoblie engins and jet engines, they both serve a like purpose for the world. This can be said because that amount of miles that all cars in te world may total, if not exceed, the total amout flown by jet engines. This may be true, but tha automobile cannot cross the oceans or some of the other places planes go, nor can automobiles match jet plane’s speed, unless it uses a jet for itself.
