Sundarban : Oopportunity to be part of history and the future!
Sundarban
reserved forest is the largest natural mangrove forest of the world.
Total Sundarban covers an area of nearly
10000sq.km including the
10000sq.km including the
Indian
(west Bengal ) part. Sundarban Bangladesh portions covers 6017 sq.km.
It is situated towards south of Khulna , Bagerhat and Satkhira districts
along the Bay of Bengal . Two third of Sundarban is mangrove forest and
the rest is water. The entire Sundarban has been included as a “RAMSAR” site for wetland and 1397 sq.km area of 3 wildlife sanctuaries has been declared as “World Heritage Site” in 1997.
Sundarban is one of
the 28 official finalists for the New7Wonders of Nature, A campaign
which will see people worldwide vote to nominate the seven most
remarkable, beautiful or extra-ordinary natural locations and features
on our planet. In 2011, New7Wonders of Nature will be elected and
announced to the world. Vote now and help bring Sundarban into the final
seven. This is your
Sundri ( Heriteira
fomes ) is the dominant plant species of the Sundarban. Perhaps this is
the reason for naming the forest as ‘Sundarban'. On the other hand
people presumed that from word “Samundar” (means Sea), first
“Samundarban” and then the name “Sundarban” came into existence.
The forest floor rises 0.9 m to 2.11 m above mean sea level. The entire forest is inundated twice a day with the high tide.
Water is saline. Salinity varies
seasonally. During monsoon salinity decreases for heavy downpour in the
upstream. Western Sundarban is more saline than that of eastern. That's
why eastern region is rich in Sundri trees and the other hand Goran ( Ceriops decandra )
dominates the western region. Rich biodiversity associated with high
and low tides has made an unique ecosystem here in Sundarban which is
very rare.
